Couldn't post this in the recycle bin - feel free to put it there
Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you'll probably know Rockstar decided to do a sweep and purge a large portion of modded money in the game. As you'll probably expect I have an opinion on this and we'll get to that in a moment, probably one or two confessions along the way.
So let's begin, I'll give you a brief history lesson. I've been playing the game for two and a half years, during this time I've had a variety of experiences:
• I know the struggle to make cash when first starting out (twice for the record - as most of you know I've had two accounts, both of which I started at a time when making money wasn't easy).
• I've blown cold hard cash on a shark card - yes I have mug tattooed across my forehead, but I'd won a Pig Benus ton of money on an accumulator. (Money well spent I had basic weapons and the cash brought me fully upgraded weapons and a few cars - this way I wasn't getting raped in death matches and freeroam).
• I've done a few glitches. OK, well a lot of glitches, money glitches and also a few others, but we'll ignore those for now as money is the point of this essay.
• I've also encountered modders along the way, as have most people who've ever played on the old gen consoles.
I guess is the point I'm making is that I've been incredibly fortunate that I have been able to experience the game from both sides of the coin, the rich and the poor.
Anyway, more to the point the money wipe. From what I've gathered having read multiple posts from people moaning and whinging they've lost money and spoken to people who've lost money, it is that from what I've gathered, only people who had modded money have been effected so far. There also seems to be a trend, that the people who have been wiped are those who have their accounts linked to the social club site.
Now let's be honest, this isn't the first time Rockstar have done this. They did it back in the day when DNS servers were a thing (remember them? ), people were obtaining content they otherwise wouldn't have and got to a stage where there were billion dollar bounties being made. I have a friend who was caught up in this - he lost everything. The collectors content, clothes, money and even rank. Fast forward to 2016 where every man and his dog has "obtained illegitimate money" or at the very least knows someone who has. Modded accounts are pretty much rife in the game again, once again. Not a day goes by where I’ve encountered a player where I could question the legitimacy of the account, and don’t even get me started on the level 8000s!!
In my experience the people who have obtained modded accounts did so because they did not have the time to invest in the game and want a quick fix. You can hardly blame anyone who considers it as the easy option. Hiring a modder who will give you everything you want for around $20 is considerably cheaper than buying Shark Cards, especially since its sixty odd quid for $16mil.
I won’t bother to patronise anyone and point out that Rockstar can easily point to their terms of service to justify their actions. Ultimately, if you obtained billions of in game dollars and left it in your bank (regardless of how), you’re asking for them to take it off you. The downfall of many people in this game is greed. If you were smart enough to by some Adders/T20s or whatever the new “bond” is, then you’ve probably got away with it. But if I were you I wouldn’t sell them until you need money to buy stuff straight away. If you’ve still got your modded money, for Christ sake keep your mouth shut, because you might be next!
My one bug bear of all of this is they’ve solely concentrated on removing money – that’s it. Perhaps they’re hoping for a massive revenue boost, perhaps
The level 8000s will still be there, the griefers will still be there, the morons who engage in free roam war only to kill themselves to preserve their precious K/D will still be there. And of course, Rockstar will still be there, rubbing their hands with delight of the possibility of more Shark Card sales. Sadly, this is what this game has come to. Free DLC with product they’ll charge you the moon for in the hope you’ll buy more shark cards and day by day Rockstar turn into EA. The game is still broken, the servers are still Pancakeed, and they can’t seem to implement a DLC without Pancakeing something else over. I could write an essay in alone about how the faults of Rockstar – but I wouldn’t be telling you anything you didn’t already know.
So what happens next? Who knows is this a one wave attack or are they planning this on a regular basis, only Rockstar know the answer to that. I can imagine we may see people we know changing their gamertags for a fresh account loaded with cash, perhaps they’ll be wiser next time, perhaps not.
Having promised a confession at the very beginning, I leave you with this; I have two accounts, both had what Rockstar deem as “illegitimate funds”. One got wiped. The other is perfectly fine. I feel slightly apathetic about the whole situation. I feel what they say is true “it’s not illegal until you get caught”.
